Leaking hydraulic fitting: causes and remedies
A hydraulic fitting is leaking and you are standing at the machine. Oil escapes at the connection, drips or forms a film. Five steps lead to the cause, no theory: first secure the system, then read the leak correctly, then retighten or replace in a targeted way. Blind retightening under pressure is the most common mistake and the most dangerous.

Check first, then retighten
Depressurize the system first. Pump off, system pressure to zero, secured against restart, and relieve accumulators and standing oil columns as well. Only then does the wrench go on the fitting. Retightening a line under pressure can destroy the sealing point for good and release a fine oil jet that penetrates the skin.
Retightening only helps while the fitting is not yet tight. If the union nut is already tight and still leaks, the sealing point is damaged: turning further presses the cutting ring deeper, pinches the O-ring or cracks the flare cone, and the leak gets worse. So first check which sealing principle is present and in what condition it is.
Causes by sealing principle
Every fitting seals by a particular principle, and each principle leaks in its own way. Determine the sealing form first, then the leak pattern leads to the cause. If the assignment is not obvious at once, determine the thread and sealing form cleanly on the part.

Two causes are behind most cases: wrong tightening and a damaged sealing element. Fittings left too loose never seal properly, while over-tightened ones destroy the ring, flare or O-ring. That is why the cutting ring is assembled turn-controlled, not by feel, and stud ends follow manufacturer-specific tightening torques. Look for the cause at the sealing form rather than at tightening alone, and you replace in a targeted way instead of retightening again and again.
Diagnosis in five steps
- Depressurize the system and secure it against restart. Wipe and clean the leak site, because oil migrates and the visible trace is rarely the source.
- Locate the exit point precisely: does the oil come from the union nut, the stud end to the block, or directly from the tube? That separates the tube-side sealing point, the port thread and tube damage.
- Determine the sealing principle: 24° cutting ring or DKO, 37° flare, ORFS face, or a stud end with a seal ring or O-ring.
- Check seat and condition: is the nut still loose at all? On a cutting ring, is a raised collar visible? Are the O-ring or seal ring present and undamaged?
- Act in a targeted way: if the connection is not yet tight, retighten in a controlled way (cutting ring turn-controlled, stud end to torque). If the sealing point is damaged, replace it. Then bring the system back up to pressure slowly and watch the site.
When to replace instead of retighten
- The nut is already tight and the fitting still leaks.
- The O-ring or seal ring is visibly pinched, cracked or hardened.
- On a cutting ring, the collar is missing, or the tube is constricted or moved axially.
- The 37° flare cone is cracked, oval or notched.
- The fitting was over-tightened: cutting ring too deep, thread stretched.
- R and NPT are paired (55° against 60°): this connection never seals by retightening.
- The sealing face is corroded or washed out by the oil.
- The tube shows a crack or fatigue fracture near the fitting.
When you replace, fit the new part cleanly to specification: cutting ring assembly is turn-controlled, and stud ends are tightened to torque. The most common repeat mistake is to fit the same part with more force instead of removing the cause.
