Identify hydraulic threads: how to name every thread

An unknown thread on a hydraulic component costs time the moment you guess it. Three measurements name any tube fitting for certain: outer diameter, pitch, taper. The flank angle finally separates the families that look alike at the caliper, from BSP through metric and NPT to JIC and ORFS. With the four values in the thread identifier or the quick-match table you match male or female for certain and order the right fitting straight away.

For a certain identification you need three tools: a caliper for the diameter, a pitch gauge for the pitch and an angle gauge for the flank angle. A thread ring or plug gauge covers the critical cases. Work the four steps in order and you narrow any thread down to one family and one size before you even open the charts.

The outer diameter is the primary key because you take it straight off the male thread. Pitch and taper then decide between the families that look similar in diameter. The flank angle finally separates the Whitworth threads (55 degrees) from the metric and American ones (60 degrees). Note all four values before you go to the charts: diameter, pitch, taper and flank angle. Only the combination is unambiguous; a single value quickly misleads among the similar families.

  1. Measure the outer diameter: take the largest diameter of the thread crests on the male thread with a caliper, or the inner diameter on a female thread. Note the value in mm.
  2. Check parallel or tapered: measure the outer diameter once at the frontmost and once at the rearmost full thread. Both values equal means parallel (G, M, UN); decreasing toward the tip means tapered (R, NPT, roughly 1 mm per 16 mm of length). On tapered threads set the caliper at a defined thread, for example the third.
  3. Determine the pitch: apply the pitch gauge until no gap remains. Read metric threads in mm, inch threads in threads per inch (TPI). The pitch is the axial distance between two adjacent threads.
  4. Check flank angle and sealing seat: 55 degrees (Whitworth: BSP G and R) versus 60 degrees (metric M, NPT, UN) with the angle gauge. Judge the seat: 24-degree internal cone (cutting ring, DKO), 37-degree flare (JIC), flat O-ring face (ORFS), 60-degree cone or flat gasket (BSP stud).

Example: an inch thread with 18 threads per inch

  1. Measured: 18 threads per inch on an inch thread.
  2. Substitute: P = 25.4 mm / 18.
  3. Result: P = 1.41 mm pitch.
  4. Cross-check: 1.41 mm is the value for NPT 1/4 and NPT 3/8 (both 18 threads per inch) in the NPT size chart of the article on thread types in hydraulics.

Conversion between pitch and thread count is universally valid; the target value of 1.41 mm follows ANSI/ASME B1.20.1, as in the NPT chart. As of 2026-07.

With the four values noted, you assign the thread to one of the five families that dominate hydraulics. The table names, per family, the feature that separates it from the others, the range of preferred sizes and the sealing seat by which you recognise the port form. Two rules often save the trip to the charts entirely: a 55-degree flank angle is always BSP, and a tapered thread is always R or NPT. What remains is a parallel 60-degree thread, and there the pitch decides: metric in plain millimetre values, JIC and ORFS in threads per inch.

Risk of confusion

How do I identify a hydraulic thread?

Measure three quantities: the outer diameter with a caliper, the pitch with a pitch gauge, and the taper by comparing the diameter front and back. Diameter, pitch and taper give you the family and size. The flank angle of 55 or 60 degrees additionally separates BSP from metric and NPT.

Is my thread BSPP or NPT?

BSPP (G) is parallel, the outer diameter stays constant over the thread length, and the flank angle is 55 degrees. NPT is tapered, the diameter decreases toward the tip, and the flank angle is 60 degrees. Measure the diameter front and back and check the angle with a thread gauge, and the identification is clear.

How do I tell G from R?

G and R have identical core data and thread count at the same size; only the form differs. G is parallel, the diameter stays constant; R is tapered, the diameter decreases toward the tip by roughly 1 mm per 16 mm. The diameter alone is not enough, the taper check is decisive.

Can I confuse JIC and ORFS?

Yes, JIC -06 and ORFS -04 both carry the 9/16-18 UNF thread and engage by hand. But they never seal, because JIC has a 37-degree flare cone and ORFS a flat face with an O-ring. Check the sealing seat, not the thread.

Which tool do I need to measure a thread?

A caliper for the outer diameter and a pitch gauge for the pitch are enough in most cases. An angle gauge for 55 and 60 degrees plus a thread ring gauge help with the critical pairs such as NPT versus BSPT. More tooling is rarely needed.
