ORFS fittings explained: the O-ring face seal
An ORFS fitting seals with an elastomer O-ring in a flat face, which makes it especially vibration-resistant. The parallel UN thread only provides the clamping force; sealing happens at the face, not in the thread. The most common trap follows directly from that: ORFS -04 and JIC -06 carry the same thread and screw together by hand, and that pairing never seals.

How ORFS seals
ORFS seals over an O-ring in the flat face, not in the thread. ORFS stands for O-Ring Face Seal, standardized as SAE J1453 and ISO 8434-3. The male end carries a groove with an O-ring in its flat face. On tightening, the union nut presses this face against the flat mating face, and the O-ring does the sealing. Because no metallic sealing edge is formed and no tapered thread pairing is needed, the connection forgives small assembly errors and survives pressure surges and continuous vibration far better than metal-sealing systems. On tightening, the flat metal faces also touch and limit the compression of the O-ring, which keeps the risk of over-tightening low. In the trade the form also appears under brand names such as Seal-Lok.
Parker manufacturer data list the O-ring face seal per ISO 8434-3 as its own connection type alongside the cutting ring (ISO 8434-1) and the 60-degree cone connection. The O-ring is the actual sealing element and must suit the medium: NBR covers mineral oil and most hydraulic fluids, FKM is intended for higher temperatures and aggressive media. Assembly is hand-tight and then a defined further turn until the faces lie flat on each other. As a wear part, you check the O-ring at every re-assembly and replace it if it is damaged or hardened.
Dimensions
ORFS sizes are given via the dash number, which counts the tube outer diameter in sixteenths of an inch. The matching UN/UNF thread comes out one size larger than on a JIC fitting for the same tube, because the flat face needs more room. The following chart lists the standardized preferred sizes with thread, outer diameter and tube outer diameter.
An example makes the relationship clear: for a tube with 12.7 mm outer diameter (1/2 inch) you use the dash size -08 with the thread 13/16-16 UN. The same tube size would carry the smaller thread 3/4-16 UNF on a JIC fitting. So dash number and thread are not the same, and exactly this shift explains the frequent mix-up with JIC. When ordering, therefore watch the dash size together with the form, not the thread size alone. Because thread and sealing face are standardized, ORFS parts from different manufacturers fit together as long as dash size and sealing seat match.

When ORFS is the right choice
- Strong vibration and alternating load: mobile hydraulics, construction and agricultural machinery, where metal sealing points loosen over time.
- High pressures up to about 420 bar (6000 psi) with high fatigue strength thanks to the elastic face seal.
- Leak-critical systems: the face seal with O-ring avoids the metallic sealing point entirely.
- Recurring assembly: the O-ring forgives small errors and can be replaced as a wear part.
- Wide size range: the series from -04 to -24 covers tube outer diameters from 6 to 50 mm and fits the bulk of mobile and stationary hydraulics.
- Mind the limits: the flat face must be clean and undamaged, and the O-ring must suit the medium (NBR or FKM).
ORFS is not the only form with an inch UN thread. Because JIC uses the same thread in a different dash number, the mix-up is common; all critical pairs and the measuring protocol are in identify hydraulic threads. Against the metal-sealing cutting ring, ORFS wins on vibration and repeated assembly, but it demands a flat, clean mating face and the right O-ring. Whether ORFS or a metal-sealing tube fitting is the better choice is settled in flare or cutting ring.
